Dental Scaling

Oral hygiene is all about keeping a clean mouth and is considered the best way to prevent cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and other dental disorders. It also helps prevent bad breath.

Oral hygiene is necessary to maintain healthy teeth and mouth. Scaling preserves teeth which become less prone to cavities. These remain clean and free from tartar, healthy gums are pink and firm.

Why do i need descaling?

In France, there is no dental hygienist, so it is the dentist who performs the scaling. Regular professional teeth cleaning is important to remove plaque that can develop even with careful brushing and despite the use of dental floss, especially in areas that are difficult for the patient to reach alone. It involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits on the teeth. Most dentists recommend having your teeth cleaned by a professional every six months.

Even if you do a great job of cleaning teeth on your own, getting professional cleaning done is essential to complement oral hygiene that cannot be done on your own. At the Ferney Voltaire Dental Center, we use, in addition to the instruments, the ultrasound method which makes it possible to 'break' the plaques of tartar that have formed.

You can also choose to end your scaling session, if you wish, with an air polishing. The Air Flow technique that we use is also called Biofilm therapy.

Air polishing by Air Flow technique or Biofilm therapy

Air-polishing is a method using pressurized air and water to project a controlled flow of powder to the teeth. The jet removes stains and bacterial deposits that form on the surface of the teeth and under the gum (With a special tip). If the dental plaque which contains bacteria is not regularly removed by regular and appropriate care and by professional means, inflammation of the gums may result (red swollen gums and bleeding). It is an early form of periodontal disease: gingivitis.

The cleaning of the Biofilm is essential by its action, to the sustainability of your gingival and bone health. The air-polishing guarantees a complete and gentle cleaning of the teeth even in areas that are difficult to access and better protects your teeth against future attacks.


Endodontics or root canal treatment

Root canal treatment (or endodontic or root canal treatment) is designed to remove bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth, and save the natural tooth. When a tooth undergoes root canal treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed.

There is no need to worry when you are prescribed root canal therapy to treat a damaged or diseased tooth. Millions of teeth are treated and kept this way every year, relieving pain and making teeth healthy again.

Inside your tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, which help grow the root of your tooth as it grows. A fully grown tooth can survive without a pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues around it.

Modern root canal therapy can usually be done in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth, it is painless and extremely effective.

Root canal therapy and pain

With anesthesia, a root treatment is no more painful than other regular dental treatment, such as a filling or extraction, although you may experience slight discomfort for a few days.

How do you know if you need a root canal?

The symptoms are as follows:

• Severe pain caused by pressure on the tooth (chewing, for example)
  Prolonged sensitivity of the tooth to heat or cold, even after the source of heat or cold has been removed.

See your dentist as soon as any of these symptoms appear. Prevention is better than cure, don't let it escalate to toothache. After a while, the inflammation spreads and you cannot escape the extraction. Clearly, the best way to prevent oral infections and maintain your oral health is to visit your dentist regularly and have regular scalings.

Curettage (periodontology)

Periodontology is the study and treatment of the periodontium either of the bone surrounding the tooth or the gums. The most common disease in these structures is periodontitis, also known as "periodontal disease". This disease is an inflammation of the periodontium which can, in the worst cases, lead to tooth loss.

Periodontitis is caused by the presence of bacteria on the surface of the teeth which has reached the gums or even to the roots of the teeth. This bacteria causes local inflammation in the neighboring structures. Untreated, these inflammatory reactions can lead to the loss of bone tissue supporting the teeth.

Gingivitis is the precursor to periodontitis. Gingivitis is curable, our dentist will give your teeth a full professional cleaning or an open or closed curetage. If it is left untreated, chronic periodontitis may progressively develop.

Consequences of periodontitis

Untreated periodontitis is the cause of death in adulthood. The whole periodontium is attacked and damaged by this aggressive bacteria. Therefore, the gums lose their strength and this bacteria irretrievably damages the roots of the tooth and "eat away" at the bone. As a result, the presentation of the teeth can lead to their loss, usually accompanied by widespread signs of inflammation of the gums.

Lots of people are unaware that the periodontal disease is not limited to the mouth cavity, but can affect the body. When released into the bloodstream, the bacteria present in the mouth can be the main risk factor in coronary diseases and also increases the risk of strokes.
